Assistive Technology (AT) is an object, device, or system, that is used by folks with disabilities for increased functionality and independence when completing day-to-day tasks. Things like self-care, house chores, navigation, and communication. But, it isn’t always designed specifically for this purpose.
Example: Voice Assistants like Siri or Alexa. They allow us to talk to our devices and tell them what we want or need! A great tool for many of us, while also accommodating a wide range of disabilities, including those related to mobility, vision, and cognition.
Adaptive Technology is a subset of AT that serves the same purpose, but is designed specifically for folks with disabilities.
Example: Screen Reader Software. It converts all text content on a screen to speech or braille, providing information access in a non-visual way. This is especially important for some folks who have low vision, are blind, or d/Deafblind.
Assistive technology, at all levels, empowers people with disabilities to independently interact with and navigate the world. Society must be structured and educated in a way that is not just compatible with this technology, but also aware of its tremendous value.
